Brigitte Puschmann - Wallpaper Series
The "Wallpaper" series explores presence, transformation, and disruption in painting. It gets its name from flat shapes that lie across the canvas like torn wallpaper fragments. These elements do what good abstract art should do: they irritate. They break the visual flow, disrupt familiar habits of seeing, and bring a strange, new energy into the work.
The concept behind the series
Each fragment is precisely placed: position, materiality, and effect within the composition reinforce the pull-and-push effect of the painting. This creates a tension between proximity and distance, presence and dissolution. What at first glance appears to be a disruption reveals itself upon closer inspection as the central event of the painting—a symbol of how ruptures in life can reveal new orders.
A work from the Wallpaper series was selected for the charity auction in 2026 to benefit Doctors Without Borders and exhibited in the W&K Wienerroither & Kohlbacher gallery in Vienna – a confirmation that made me very happy.
