Timeless – what makes an artwork timeless?
The "Timeless" series revolves around a question that keeps me occupied as a painter: What makes a work timeless? And what does it even mean when we call a piece of art that? Alongside my core theme—setting surface and color into dynamics—it was the feeling of timelessness itself that I visually investigate here. How can I best express this feeling, and at what point does it shift? In doing so, I am aware that a confirmed timelessness of a work cannot happen in the present moment.
Abstraction with spatial illusion
The works in this series play a double game: as abstract pieces, they follow strict rules of composition – yet at the same time, they create a spatial illusion that offers the eye a certain figuration. Surfaces tilt into depths, edges become horizons. It is precisely in this oscillation between abstraction and suggestion that I see a key to timelessness: the image never commits to a fixed form and thus remains ever-present.
Formally, the series builds on the area research of my NL Stripes , but leads it in a quieter, more contemplative direction.
