Biography
Brigitte Puschmann (b. 1969, Munich, Germany) is a contemporary artist working between Germany and Austria. Her practice explores transformation, layered realities, and the dynamic interplay of color, form, and perception. Before fully dedicating herself to art, Puschmann built a career in business, where she focused extensively on processes of transformation, particularly within large organizations. This experience continues to inform her artistic research, which investigates change as a fundamental principle shaping both human perception and the structures of reality.
Alongside her professional career, she trained also in interior design at Rhodec International College (UK) and studied painting at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts Salzburg. Since 2024, she has devoted herself entirely to her artistic practice. Puschmann completed her diploma in Drawing and Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kolbermoor under Prof. Markus Lüpertz, where she continues as a master student to explore painting as a system of relations rather than representation.
Her work ranges from large-scale acrylic paintings to modular wall pieces and sculptural installations, often incorporating interactive or combinatory elements. Her works have been presented in galleries, art associations, and international art fairs, including a solo exhibition at Samuelis Baumgarte Gallery, Bielefeld, and exhibitions in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. Her work is part of the Copelouzos Family Art Museum collection in Athens. She received multiple nominations and awards.

"Everyone is responsible for what they paint."
From Brigitte Puschmann's perspective: "The motto that guided my time in the class was: 'Everyone is responsible for what they paint.' Lüpertz doesn't teach imitation—quite the opposite. He demands conviction. The critiques of the paintings aren't about pleasing the eye, but about whether a picture exists as a painting: composition, the use of colors and color harmonies, consistency. This is demanding, sometimes uncomfortable, requiring constant decisions, and precisely for that reason so valuable. You learn to defend your own work—or 'to learn to see'—to understand it. And only then can you consistently discard it and start anew."
“His perspective was a turning point for my own work. When he described my reduced striped paintings as the logical consequence of my earlier series, it was more than a compliment—it was confirmation that my development followed an inner necessity. These works, now known as the Stripes series, are part of my core oeuvre.” But he also taught us to recognize the dangers of methodology. Methodology may be helpful for repeating something that is successful over and over again. But it is not methodology that is desired, but rather constant expansion, experimentation, and refinement. In one of our recent critiques, he enthusiastically noted that my works have a principle, not a method, and that through this principle a wonderful, unique world has been created. “A truly important compliment for me.”
